The National Movement of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan needs active participants in cleanliness activities across the nation and on all levels, to turn the dream of a ‘Clean India’, once seen by Mahatma Gandhi into reality. Organic waste littered in villages, and cow dung stock piled at the road sides may contain pathogens which can cause disease and also will emit greenhouse gases into the atmosphere by uncontrolled organic degradation. Cleaning the villages from organic waste, and utilizing the litter for pollution free energy production by the method of anaerobic digestion will be a sustainable contribution for the Swachh Bharat mission, will generate renewable power and avoid carbon emissions. Using the Biogas of the plant as a fuel for power generation will avoid Greenhouse-Gas emission of approx. 7,500 tons CO2 per year, compared to power production by a coal based power plant, even without considering less logistical effort.
